The living room is the heart of the home. As the space where family gathers and guests are welcomed, feng shui reads household, social, and people luck from its energy. A bright, well-ordered living room is said to keep its members' relationships circulating. The key is an arrangement that lets qi "gather without stagnating."
The sofa is the "master seat" of the living room. By the same principle as the bed, it is stable with a wall behind it, and best facing a direction where the entrance or living-room doorway is in view. An arrangement open behind or with your back to a walkway creates subconscious unease that erodes the energy of whoever sits there. If the sofa must have its back to a window, place a console or low cabinet behind it to create a "hill to lean on."
In feng shui, qi flows along the paths people walk. If furniture or belongings block the flow from entrance to living room and from living room to each room, the circulation of qi is blocked accordingly. In particular, a layout where the whole home is visible straight through from the entrance (entrance–living room–veranda in a line) is said to let incoming energy escape at once — so a remedy is to break the flow once with a partition, curtain, or tall plant in the middle.
The living room can hold the largest plant in the home. Foliage plants with round leaves that grow upward (monstera, rubber plant, bird-of-paradise) symbolize generous energy and are good for family luck. Thorny cacti, by contrast, suit the veranda or windowsill more than the living room. Open the curtains during the day to let in plenty of natural light, and in the evening, softening the shadows with two or three accent lights rather than one main light revives the energy of gathering.
The TV is the fire-energy element of the modern living room. It is not bad in itself, but when the TV monopolizes the center, the family's gaze and conversation turn only toward the screen. The feng shui compromise is to place "earth" energy items — ceramics, stone accents, ochre or beige fabrics — around the TV wall so the excess fire drains into earth (fire feeds earth). Wood items such as plants actually feed fire (wood feeds fire), so they are not the tool for calming it. There is also a remedy of covering the screen with fabric so it does not become a black mirror when off.
