In feng shui the kitchen is the space that "cooks" the family's health and wealth. Because fire (the stove) and water (the sink) — opposing energies — coexist in one space, balance is key. The goal of kitchen feng shui is the state where water and fire do not clash but accomplish their work together.
A layout where the stove (fire) directly faces the sink or fridge (water) is the most-avoided structure, called a water-fire clash. If you cannot change the structure, place "wood" energy — a wooden cutting board, wood accents, green plants — in the path between them. Wood acts as a mediator that receives water and passes it to fire, turning conflict into mutual generation. Placing them side by side on the same line is fine, with the countertop between them (the realm of wood and earth) serving as a natural buffer.
In feng shui the fridge is the home's granary. A fridge piled with expired food and mystery containers reads as a "storehouse hoarding rotten wealth" — which is why emptying and wiping the fridge once a month is said to be the most effective wealth-luck remedy. Using this app's fridge-management feature to track expiry dates is an excellent modern feng shui practice too. Flyers and magnets stuck all over the fridge door are also said to scramble wealth energy, so keep them minimal.
Knives carry "killing energy," so the rule is to store them out of sight. A magnetic rack displaying knife blades on the wall is a demerit from a feng shui view — store them in a drawer or block. Continuing to use chipped bowls and cracked cups "because it'd be a waste" is also taboo. A broken dish symbolizes broken wealth luck, so the old remedy is to discard it the moment you find it.
The smoke and smells produced while cooking are murky energy. Think of ventilating after cooking as a ritual that keeps only the delicious energy and sends out the murk. Keep food waste in a lidded container and empty it the same day if possible. Cleaning the grime from the sink drain is so basic to kitchen feng shui that it is likened to "plugging the hole where wealth leaks."
