In feng shui the entrance is the "mouth of qi." It is seen as the channel through which all energy — especially wealth luck — enters with people, so it is the first space checked in a feng shui consultation. Fortunately, the entrance is small, so it is the place you can change fastest at the lowest cost.
The first principle of entrance feng shui is brightness. A dark, gloomy entrance is said to turn away even the vitality trying to enter, and a dim entrance genuinely weighs down a home's first impression. If your entrance has no natural light, swap the bulb for a brighter one and set the sensor light to stay on generously. An entrance left with a burned-out bulb is a classic feng shui sign of a "home where luck has been cut off."
For an entrance mirror, placement is everything. A mirror directly facing you as you open the door is a classic taboo — it bounces incoming energy right back out. A mirror on the side wall, by contrast, makes the space feel larger and keeps energy lingering, so it is considered auspicious. It also serves the practical purpose of checking your appearance before heading out — so if yours faces front, just moving it to the side wall is enough. Round-cornered mirrors create softer energy than sharp-angled ones.
Shoes scattered at the entrance block the channel of qi. Keep just one or two pairs you actually wear out neatly, and put the rest in the shoe cabinet. Arranging shoes with the toes pointing outward (toward the door) is said to be good for activity luck — energy ready to go out. Wet umbrellas in the stand, delivery boxes, and temporary recycling storage are the three big demerits of entrance feng shui — moisture and discard-bound items gather yin energy.
Placing one lively potted plant at the entrance is said to purify incoming energy. For a low-light entrance, shade-tolerant plants like snake plant (Sansevieria) suit well. Creating a good first scent with a subtle diffuser or room spray is a modern feng shui remedy too — smell shapes the memory of a space. But wilted plants and dried bouquets backfire, so clear them the moment they lose their life.
