In feng shui the bedroom is the "space of renewal" where you recharge the day's energy. We spend a third of our lives asleep, so the spot and direction your body rests in receives the flow of qi the longest. The bedroom is a room where simply rearranging furniture — no major work needed — makes a real, felt difference.
The classic spot for the bed is diagonal to the door — where the door is in your field of view but not directly facing it. In feng shui, a bed in line with the door lets incoming energy strike the body straight on; psychologically, facing away from or directly toward the door also creates subconscious tension that lowers sleep quality. Always put the headboard against a wall: an empty space behind your head is seen as a "mountainless" position with unstable energy. Avoid placing your head right under a window, too — you'd be sleeping over a channel where qi flows in and out.
Traditionally, an eastward head receives the rising sun's energy, good for growth and vitality — recommended for students and the young. South is the direction of honor and recognition, suited to socially active phases; North has calming, settling energy, fitting for those who need deep sleep. A westward head, the setting-sun direction, is good for rest but may dampen motivation. Few rooms allow every direction, though — remember the priority order: "headboard against wall → not in line with the door → direction."
A mirror that reflects you sleeping is the most frequently cited taboo. It is said to reflect qi and disrupt your nighttime recharge — and in fact, movement caught in a mirror at night rouses the brain. If a mirror faces the bed, cover it with cloth or move it inside the wardrobe. TVs, phones and other electronics carry "fire" energy, so the farther from your head the better. Keep under-bed storage as empty as possible, too: the space under the bed is a channel for circulating qi, so clutter there means sleeping over stagnant energy.
Earth tones with lowered saturation — beige, ivory, soft gray — are stabilizing for a bedroom. Intense red carries strong fire energy that disrupts sleep, while blues are calming but can turn cold if overdone. For lighting, warm-temperature indirect light beats a white ceiling fixture; before sleep, using light at the foot of the bed rather than by your head follows the natural flow of qi.
