The desk is where the energy of work and study condenses. In feng shui, the Munchang energy that governs study, documents, and exams is said to shift with the desk's position and direction. Now that remote work is everyday life, desk feng shui is effectively career feng shui too.
The golden rule of desk placement is a miniature of "mountain behind, water in front." A solid wall (mountain) behind you, with a little open space (water) ahead of your gaze, is ideal. If a door or walkway is behind you, focus is said to leak away — and indeed, a presence behind you is a classic attention-scatterer. Rather than a desk pressed nose-to-wall, leaving even a hand's width of gap for visual openness gives your thinking room to breathe. A seat directly facing the door also gets buffeted by passing energy, so a diagonal placement is recommended.
In traditional feng shui the left is the Azure Dragon (benefactors, honor) and the right is the White Tiger (wealth, action). On a desk, placing tall items — a bookshelf or monitor — on the left and keeping the right low and clear is considered the auspicious form of "the Dragon subduing the Tiger." Practically, it is also a sensible layout that secures writing space for right-handers. Clutter on the desk is noise in your thinking itself. The habit of clearing your desk at the end of the day is said to awaken the next day's Munchang energy.
One small plant on the desk rests both your screen-tired eyes and your energy at once. In feng shui, lucky bamboo is a classic remedy for study luck, and rosemary is known as a scent that clears the head. For lighting, a seat where natural light enters from the side (the left for right-handers) is best, and a desk lamp on the left by the same principle benefits both shadows and energy.
Calculations differ by feng shui school, but the common remedy is simple: the more you wish for success at a desk, place it "against a quiet wall, diagonal to the door, where window light enters from the side." On the wall facing the desk, leave a single line of your goal or some blank space rather than a busy poster, and stacking up finished workbooks is a modern Munchang talisman that visualizes the energy of achievement.
