Baekro (White Dew) begins when the Sun reaches 165° of ecliptic longitude, fifteen degrees before the autumn equinox point. · First pentad, 鴻雁來 — wild geese arrive from the north. · Second pentad, 玄鳥歸 — swallows go back south. · Third pentad, 羣鳥養羞 — the flocks of birds lay in food for winter. Baekro's first pentad uses exactly the same characters as Usu's second. The geese of Usu are flocks heading north in spring; the geese of Baekro are flocks coming down from the north in autumn. The swallows of the second pentad pair with 玄鳥至 at the spring equinox, recording the departure of birds that arrived half a year earlier. The 羞 of the third pentad here means provisions, not its usual sense of shame. In Korea large flocks of geese usually appear later in the autumn, but as a time for swallows to leave, Baekro fits the Korean season well.
Around Baekro, autumn gizzard shad (jeoneo) starts coming in, and Hongro apples — an early variety grown for the Chuseok ancestral table — and new chestnuts reach the markets. In years when Chuseok falls within Baekro, grave-tending, shopping and travel home all pile up together, so split the holiday cooking and start with things that can be made ahead, like jeon and seasoned greens. Nights are now cool enough for dew to form, so sleeping with the window open often ends with waking up chilly before dawn; keep a light quilted blanket (charyeop-ibul) ready on top of the summer sheet. Morning grass is wet with dew around Baekro, so for early walks or runs wear shoes with good grip and choose paved paths over dirt trails.
